Curriculum, Programs and Activities

Concord Academy is a state-approved, private, non-profit school. Its instructional programs satisfy state requirements, and students who meet these requirements receive a regular traditional diploma. The state-approved curriculum is adapted to meet the needs of students according to a realistic, yet challenging, pace for learning based on the students' abilities and achievement. A low student-teacher ratio is maintained to provide maximum attention to individual needs. Concord Academy's programs include:

The General Education "Core Curriculum" The general curriculum incorporates basic academic instruction in a variety of math, English, science, social studies, computer applications, fine arts and fitness/wellness classes to meet the state requirements for earning a regular high school diploma. Preparation for the satisfactory completion of the Tennessee Gateway Competency Tests is incorporated into all appropriate subjects. Spanish is offered for students who wish to meet college entrance requirements or who desire to learn a foreign language.

Transition and Life Skills Curriculum Courses in Teen-Adult Living and Transition help prepare students to become independent, contributing members of the family and the community.

Guidance and Relationship Skill Building Programs The Guidance Counselor gives mini workshops on character building and relationship development in a variety of classes throughout the school year. The counselor teaches a class in transition, conducts a "peer helper" program, helps to organize community service events and parent information programs. In addition, the counselor works with individual students and their families wherever special concerns arise.

Therapeutic Component Concord Academy offers group (and sometimes individual) counseling provided privately by a licensed psychologist during the school day.

Extra-curricular Social Activities The Concord Parent Teacher Organization funds activities that encourage peer interaction and foster a feeling of being "typical," accepted members of the student body. These events include family banquets, dances, an annual end-of-school year trip, and a sensational prom in which all high school students participate. An optional after school program called GEMS (Girls Empowered to Make a Stand--for Righteous Living) is based on Biblical Principles and covers topics such as self-awareness, beauty, health, dating and sex.

Community Service Projects The staff instituted a community service program in which students gain experience and discover a sense of worth by helping others. Examples of school-wide service projects include sponsoring a "fall carnival" for the young children from The Madonna Learning Center and the mother's day out program of Mullins United Methodist Church, collecting cans of food for a local church food pantry and participating in games with nursing home residents.
